Auf Brettern mit Rollen standen in den 1950/60er Jahren als erste Surfer in den USA, um auch an wellenlosen Tagen den "Asphalt zu surfen". Daraus entwickelten sich die Skateboards u. a. mit verbesserten Rollen aus Polyurethan (Boom in den 70igern). Skaten ist mit zahlreichen, sehr beeindruckenden Tricks verbunden: im Flachen auf der Straße, an Hindernissen und in Ramp/Bowl im Skatepark.
Longboards (ab 90 cm Länge, mit anderen Rollen, Achsen und Brettform als Skateboards) sind ‒ als die eigentlich ursprüngliche Form des Surfersatzes ‒ seit Ende der 90iger Jahre immer beliebter. Disziplinen sind hier Downhill, Freeride, Slalom, Dancing, für jedermann das gemächlichere Cruising (Transportmittel in der Stadt), Carving und Longdistance.
Mit diesen Vorbildern wurden andere Sportarten ebenso auf die Straße gebracht: Snowboarding (Mountainboards), Wind- und Kitesurfen (Kite Landboarding), Stand-Up Paddling (Abstoßen mit einem Stock).
Seit Mitte der 90er erlebte dann auch der gute alte Roller (engl. Scooter) durch das Kickboard (Kombination von Skateboard und Tretroller, z.B. "K2" oder "Ciro") eine Renaissance. Als urbane Transportalternative könnten zukünftig batteriegetriebene Elektro-Boards, E-Scooter und E-Tretroller mehr Verbreitung finden.
On boards with wheels first stood surfers in the 1950/60s in the USA to "surf the streets" on a day without waves. From this emerged skateboards with improved wheels made of polyurethane (boom in the 70s). Skateboarding is combined with numerous, very impressing tricks on street, obstacles and ramp/bowl in skate parks.
Longboards (above 38 inch, with different wheels, axles and board shape than skateboards) - as the actually more original type to imitate surfing - are more and more popular since late 90s. Disciplines are downhill, freeride, slalom, dancing and for everybody more relaxed cruising (means of transportation in the city), carving and longdistance.
With these examples other boardsports also took to the streets: snowboarding (mountainboards), wind- and kitesurfing (kite landboarding), stand-up paddling (pushing with a stick).
Since middle of the 90s the good old scooter experienced a renaissance by means of the Kickboard (combination of skateboard and Scooter, e.g. "K2" or "Ciro"). In future battery-driven electric boards e-scooters and e-footbikes could become more widespread as urbane transportation alternatives.
